On 12 March 2021, MSC has sent a notice that SP-SSA will International Terminal (SSIT) is selected to handle Sentosa Service which is one of direct container services between Vietnam and to America West Coast belonging to MSC shipping line (Mediterranean Shipping Company), one of top international container shipping companies over the world with Head Office in Geneva, Switzerland.
The new Sentosa service is a dedicated Service of MSC to link southeast Asia with the Pacific South West market and to support the trade increases between Vietnam, SEA countries and the U.S. West Coast. Its rotation will be as follows: Singapore – Tanjung Pelepas – Laem Chabang – Vung Tau – Long Beach – Shanghai – Ningbo – Xiamen – Singapore. The first call of the Sentosa service M/V MP THE BELICHICK will start from April and provide direct shipping service from SSIT Cai Mep to Long Beach. Currently, SSIT welcomes 2 services to the United States from shipping lines such as MSC and THE Alliance. In addition, SSIT receives several weekly intra-Asia calls from MSC, connecting Vietnam to Japan, China and other Asian countries.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic having a negative impact on the world economy, Vietnam's import and export activities have shown bright results. According to the General Statistics Office, for the first 2 months of 2021, the United States was Vietnam’s largest export market with a turnover of 14.2 billion USD, a growth of 38.2% over the same period last year. In the situation that demand for goods to the US has increased strongly, MSC launched new service Sentosa calling SSIT to accommodate stronger export demands to the US markets.
“SSIT always greatly appreciates the trust displayed by MSC shipping line in bringing container vessels to SSIT for cargo handling, thus promoting increasingly prosperous trade relations between Vietnam and the United States. With additional requests from major carriers of the world, SSIT has been and will continue to work with relevant government agencies to support large vessels calling Vietnam, including Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV’s) with capacities of 18,000+ teu’s, which support a reduction in costs per unit for the carriers. SSIT will continuously strive to further improve its service quality, being one of the largest deep-sea terminals in the country, making an important contribution to the development of the Cai Mep specifically and Vietnam seaport system in general”, said Mr. Nguyen Le Chon Tam, General Director of SSIT.
SP-SSA International Terminal (SSIT) is a deep-sea terminal located in Cai Mep Thi Vai, Ba Ria Vung Tau province. SSIT is a joint venture established in 2006 between SSA Marine, Seattle, Washington USA and the two Vietnamese companies, Vinalines and Saigon Port. Located in the downstream area of Cai Mep, SSIT was built to operate large container vessels and is equipped with modern container handling equipment, including the largest STS cranes in Vietnam, a land area of 60 hectares and 600 meters of berth length. In addition, SSIT also has 445 meters of specialized berth for handling barges connecting export and import goods from ICDs (Inland Container Depots), ports in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai and Binh Duong areas with Cai Mep area. Despite the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the Vietnamese and global economies, SSIT welcomes this weekly service to America, showing the great efforts of SSIT members and the support of the carriers. In addition, SSIT highly appreciates the great support of the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam Maritime Administration and Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province as well as government agencies and departments.
